Boy, is the taxonomy on this baby a mess. Originally we got our stock plant from Heronswood in the 1990ís, one Dan Hinckley had collected on trips to the Far East. More recently we got cuttings from the Raulston Arboretum labelled "Hydrangea aff. angustipetala" where the abbreviation "aff." is for affinis, meaning "akin to" or "related to." In looking at the two accessions we couldnít see any difference. Various references suggest a more correct name might be Hydrangea scandens subsp. chinensis about which there is great divergence of opinion. As Dr. Dirr writes:" íTis safe to conclude, for all the taxonomic hullabaloo, it will never become a garden icon." Yet, itís a pretty little thing and very distinct from other hydrangeas. Literature suggests zones 7 - 9. Height about 3 feet.
