Annabelle Hydrangea - 2 quart
Annabelle Hydrangea - 2 quart

$15.95
Hydrangea arborescens ’Annabelle’ is a selection of our US native hydrangea chosen for its very large white flower heads. It was found in Anna, IL more than a hundred years ago and has blossomed in gardens ever since. Thanks be to plantspeople who see & recognize a worthwhile selection displaying unique features. The new blooms emerge a soft green before turning white. Like all the aborescent hydrangeas, ’Annabelle’ blooms on new growth so it can be pruned late winter if you so desire. You will still have blooms that summer. Deciduous, native, 4’, for part shade. Zones 4-8.

Blue Billow Lacecap - 2 quart

$15.95
One of the earliest of the lacecaps to bloom for us, Hydrangea serrata ’Blue Billow’ is modest sized at 4’ x 4’. On acid soil its lacecap blooms are an intense, dark iridescent blue. It is also notably cold hardy. Ranks as one of the best blue lacecaps - a sturdy early bloomer. Part shade. Zones 5 - 9.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Bounty’ offers a variation on the theme of ’Annabelle’. Again the white flowers are mostly sterile & showy but the sepals comprising the mophead are smaller than those of ’Annabelle’. The flower heads display on stout stems and are less likely to flop or sprawl after rain, which we need. Tough & reliable bloomer on the new growth of the season. Shared with us by Keith Howe, Country Gardens, Fall City, WA perhaps 20 years ago. Zones 4 - 8. Height to 3 feet or so.

Dwarf Groundcover Lacecap - trade gallon
Dwarf Groundcover Lacecap - trade gallon

$20.95
Native to the Hallasan National Park in South Korea, Hydrangea serrata ’Hallasan’ is described by Corinne Mallet as a "dwarf bush, not growing taller than 80 cm, but extending horizontally in a curious way as it produces runners or stoloniferous branches. . ." The foliage is dark green but very rich in anthocyans which adds crimson marks to the foliage. It is indeed very dwarf. Recently listed as cold hardy to Zone 4. If cautious, assume Zones 5 - 8. In recently potting up some 2 gallon stock plants that were potbound we saw the evidence of the ability of this variety to creep - coming out of the roots deep in the 2 gallon were white shoots trying to find their way to spread but being held back by the plastic container.

Hayes’ Starburst hydrangea - 3 quart

$21.95
Native Hydrangea arborescens found by our friend, plantsman Hayes Jackson in Anniston, AL and shared by him with South Carolina nurseryman Ted Stephens from whom we got it. As the photos show the white, cascading flowers in late spring or early summer are comprised of multiple sterile sepals on a small growing plant. In our experience it requires excellent drainage and partial shade. Height to 3 feet. Zones 4 - 9.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Grandiflora’ is a native hydrangea similar to ’Annabelle’ with a lumpily rounded white bloom that is not so uniform as ’Annabelle.’ It is our opinion that it also has stouter stems & is not as likely to sprawl under the weight of its flowers. In all other respects it is very similar: blooms on new wood, very cold hardy, a favorite of deer. Grow in partial shade in the south, more sun up north. Height to 4 feet. Zones 4-8.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Emerald Lace’ - 3 quart

$19.95
Distinctive selection of a native hydrangea species with jagged leaf margins, somewhat fern-like that we got from AL plantsman, Hayes Jackson on a visit to his garden some years back. Flowers are white lacecaps about 4" across. Great textural addition to a woodland garden. Deer will chew it as they will H. quercifolia our other native species, but if you can keep them from defoliating it for the first few years (tomato cage?) you too can enjoy this shrub. Zones 4 - 9.

Hydrangea aspera ’Burgundy Bliss’ -3 quart

$29.95
This plant was shared with us by the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. Ted Stevens of Nurseries Caroliniana named it ’Burgundy Bliss’. It was collected in Hubei Province, China by Mikinori Ogisu and named ’Koki’. Monrovia is marketing it under a trademarked name which we can’t use, so we have it as named in the Raulston Arboretum records. Most distinctive feature is the color of the leaf undersides on new growth - burgundy. Becomes a stout 6’ plant with lacecap blooms. Needs good drainage and some shade in the deep South. Zones 7 - 9.

Hydrangea macrophylla ’All Summer Beauty’ - 2 qt

This is an old favorite. It’s a long-blooming variety of a pastel turn, pink or blue as your soil dictates, often some of each on a single shrub. The flowers are large but not outsized. Always a good bloomer for us. One of the original re-bloomers. Height to 4 feet. Zones 6 - 9.

Hydrangea macrophylla ’Ami Pasquier’ - 2 qt

$15.95
A lovely choice for those who have enough blue hydrangeas. ‘Ami Pasquier’ has small, mophead, crimson blooms. In time on strongly acidic soil it can shift to a deep wine-purple. Foliage is a glossy green. ‘Ami’ will continue to throw blooms throughout the season making it an unbeatable, modest-sized hydrangea. It is one of our favorites for all these reasons, and one of the best choices to aim for a “red” mophead if you garden on acid soil. Height 3 feet. Zones (6 - 9).

Hydrangea serrata ’Akishino-temari’ - 3 qt

$21.95
’Akishino-temari’ is a favorite of ours. It’s almost a mophead even though most H. serrata selections are lacecaps. The blooms are very pastel pink or blue (your soil pH determines) on a small shrub to 3 feet. An ideal choice for a brightly, shaded nook in your garden. It generally lightly re-blooms in the autumn. Zones 5 - 8.

Hydrangea serrata ’Beni’ - 2 quart

$22.95
Do not confuse this with the more common Hydrangea serrata ’Beni Gaku’ available for many years in this country. We got this clone from Heronswood, and believe it is a seedling bred by them. It’s a show-stopper when in bloom as it ages to a deep-red lacecap on a smallish shrub (3 feet) with clean foliage. Due to the past two winters being harsher than usual we have been unable to build numbers on this clone sufficiently to meet demand which is reflected in the small numbers available and the higher than normal price. Zones 5 - 9.

‘Kurohime’ is an outstanding lacecap. Similar to ‘Blue Billow’ in growth and stature but with stronger pigmentation which translates to an iridescent lacecap either a deeper pink or blue (likely tinged purple) for your garden. The foliage is remarkably clean and free of leaf spot, even late in the summer. Height to 3+ feet, similar width. Zones (5 - 8).
