This native honeysuckle vine has crimson trumpet blooms with yellow throats, visited by hummingbirds at the nursery and hopefully in your garden too. Lonicera sempervirens ’Alabama Crimson’ is an easy, deciduous vine for sun in zones 4-9. The blooms while beautiful are not fragrant.

Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea - trade gallon

Hydrangea quercifolia ’Alice’ is the most robust oakleaf we grow. A selection by Dr. Michael Dirr from a plant on the University of Georgia campus it has proven to be trouble free. Give it room as the original plant is 12 feet high and as wide. BIG! And ROBUST! It produces very large, slightly fragrant, creamy-white blooms in early summer that age to a fine rose color as the summer proceeds. Prefers a bit of shade around here but will do as well in full sun if need be. Easy to grow, native and splendid - just don’t crowd it. Deciduous. Zones 6 - 9.

Amethyst Falls Native Wisteria - trade gallon
Amethyst Falls Native Wisteria - trade gallon

$18.95
This is NOT the exotic wisteria species that has escaped to smother much of the roadside throughout the south, competing with Lonicera japonica for the title of the most invasive and worst vine. That thug is Wisteria floribunda (Japanese wisteria). Rather Wisteria frutescens ’Amethyst Falls’ is an American native species, a selection found in the northwest corner of SC and introduced by Head-Lee Nursery. It flowers as a very young plant with slightly fragrant blooms well after any chance of frost. Give it lots of sun. It usually reblooms in late spring. Vigorous but again, not invasive. Deciduous, for sun in zones 5-9.

I rarely see Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) offered except in specialty catalogs (we occasionally offer one). It’s not as rampant as Japanese wisteria but still requires a gardener to stay alert and control it. Interesting ID tidbit: our American and the Chinese species twine anti-clockwise (looking from above) while the thuggish Japanese species twines clockwise. Mount your ladder and ID your plant.

The search for a pink oakleaf can be as frustrating as the search for a blue rose, but recently with Hydangea q. ’Amethyst’ the cause has been advanced. This compact oakleaf selection starts white but colors very quickly to a nice pink on a fairly short plant to about 6 feet high & 6 feet wide. Deciduous, best flower color in lots of sun but it sure appreciates some shade in the hot afternoon here in GA. Selected by plantsman, Dr. Michael Dirr. Please see also H. q. ’Ruby Slippers’ for a shorter selection of our native oakleaf that pinks very well in late season. Also, there is a newly released ’Gatsby Pink’ that holds promise. Zones 6-9.

Bounty Mophead Hydrangea - trade gallon
Bounty Mophead Hydrangea - trade gallon

Hydrangea arborescens ’Bounty’ offers a variation on the theme of ’Annabelle’. Again the white flowers are mostly sterile & showy but the sepals comprising the mophead are smaller than those of ’Annabelle’. The flower heads display on stout stems and are less likely to flop or sprawl after rain, which we need. Tough & reliable bloomer on the new growth of the season. Shared with us by Keith Howe, Country Gardens, Fall City, WA perhaps 20 years ago. Zones 4 - 8. Height to 3 feet or so.

Hydrangea arborescens ’Grandiflora’ is a native hydrangea similar to ’Annabelle’ with a lumpily rounded white bloom that is not so uniform as ’Annabelle.’ It is our opinion that it also has stouter stems & is not as likely to sprawl under the weight of its flowers. In all other respects it is similar: blooms on new wood, very cold hardy, a favorite of deer. Grow in partial shade in the south, more sun up north. Height to 4 feet. Zones 4-8.

Fothergilla gardenii ’Jane Platt’ is a dwarf form of the native witch-alder with a drooping habit, to a height of perhaps 3 feet. This is a true "gardenii" species unlike the more commonly sold selection ’Mt. Airy’. ’Jane Platt’ will grow in either sun or shade but will have better fall color in more sun. The flowers are creamy-white, honey-scented, in spring before the foliage appears. Deciduous. Zones 5 - 8.

A Yankee from New Jersey, ’Snow Queen’ produces large panicles of pure white held above the foliage. If you are looking for a larger oakleaf that won’t spill out into paths, walkways or patios she will fill the bill. Confused about the difference between ’Snow Queen’ and ’Snowflake’? ’Snow Queen’ is the regal one, with upright bearing and head held high. Queenly indeed. Originally introduced by Princeton Nurseries in 1979. Zones 5-9. 6’ x 6’. Some images courtesy of Raulston Arboretum.

There is no other oakleaf like Hydrangea quercifolia ’Snowflake’. Period. Line up the lot and look closely at them in bloom. It’s obvious (and we grow the best of the rest). The multiple bracts of this sterile form give the appearance of double flowers that continue to open at the base, ever elongating the dramatic flower head. Blooms can reach 12-15". Happiest in part shade in the South. It’s a native plant if that tickles your tummy! Early summer bloom for us in GA. These are absolutely the real plant, our first cuttings came from the original stock block at Snowflake Nursery near Boaz, AL (Thanks to the Aldridges!) and now from the 40 plus stock plants planted around the nursery. This is our largest selling plant and no matter how many we grow it’s never enough. But, be assured, if you buy one from us it is the true plant. Mature height 7’ with width the same. Zones 6-9.

White Native Wisteria - 2 quart

Wisteria frutescens ’Nivea’ is the white flowered form of our native American wisteria. Like ’Amethyst Falls’ it is NOT invasive. White blooms in early May are fragrant. Wonderful native vine, quite rare even so. We don’t understand why gardeners set free W. floribunda to eat their birthright but don’t grow this restrained native. It’s in the Constitution I suppose. Deciduous, for sun, in zones 5 - 9.
